Can I go on vacation to the British Virgin Islands right now?

Depending on which destination you are flying from, entry requirements and restrictions may still apply to you. The BVI is open for tourism, and guests are required to apply through the government’s newly-implemented online portal BVI Gateway at least seven days before their departure date, if they would like to visit the islands. For further information, visit the Statement By Premier and Minister of Finance on Phase One Re-Opening of The Tourist Industry.

The Moorings has renewed its booking terms and conditions to offer guests flexible rebooking terms and peace of mind in these uncertain times. The luxury charter company has also introduced a thorough set of health and safety measures and protocols, which strive to make guests safe and provide them with the confidence to make the most of their time on the water.

Should I apply for a visa to travel to the British Virgin Islands?

If you are an American citizen, you do not need to apply for a visa to travel to the BVI. However, you will need to ensure that you have a valid passport, with at minimum six months remaining before its expiration date. Visas only apply if you stay longer than a month.

How long can I stay in the BVI without a visa?

When you arrive, the BVI immigration authorities with a one-month entry stamp, however, it is worth noting that you may need to show proof of your return ticket. You may need a visa if you decide to stay longer than a month. Extensions for up to 6 months are approved on the discretion of the Chief Immigration Officer provided that the individual can show proof of independent financial means. You may need to provide evidence of accommodation and your plans to leave the BVI at the end of your stay.

When is the best time of the year to go on vacation in the British Virgin Islands?

The temperatures are pleasantly warm all year round, so really the best time for you and your guests entirely depends on your individual preferences.

From December to February, you can anticipate clear skies, a moderate daily temperature reaching up to 25°C (77°F), little chance of rain, and winds blowing at 25-30 knots for a few days at a time.

February to May are the driest months of the year. The weather hots up and the winds sit at around 15-20 knots.

End of March/early April is the perfect time to visit if you would like to experience the excitement of the annual BVI Spring Regatta. It takes place over the course of one week and is a firmly established date in the Caribbean yachting calendar.

Island life begins to settle down in May and June, and so does the wind. It’s the perfect time to enjoy ample space for anchoring and far less visitors. In September and October, the winds are at their weakest. This is also part of the hurricane season, so check the weather if you’re planning a trip then.

If you are a foodie, November may be the perfect time for you as this is when the BVI Food Fete takes place. Celebrate all that BVI food and drink has to offer during a month-long series of events. These include ‘Taste of the BVI’ events on Tortola and Virgin Gorda, featuring cookery demonstrations, mixology competitions and live music.

Let’s start with the Mooring Hotel in Tortola where we stayed for 1 night prior to boarding our catamaran. It was outstanding, bar, food, pool, a little ship, liquor store.
The Catamaran was fantastic. 6 suites (one for the Capitan and Cook. Spacious and everything worked.
The food… wow !! No reason to go to restaurants around. You will not eat better food.
All the requested drinks were on board.
I do scuba and snorkel, and brought my mask. Their equipment on board was great. If I knew, I wouldn’t have brought it.
The Capitan was very accommodating and knowledgeable.
We were able to Bluetooth into the ship’s stereo. We played and dance throughout the trip.
I had questions and concerns about cell phone reception in this trip. We all left behind kids and our practices, reason for the concern. I ended buying the Garmin inReach. I’m glad to inform that there was signal EVERYWHERE we went. I never touched the Garmin.
I strongly recommend this trip.

We chose a 53’ power cat, sailing from Tortola, BVI, that was super luxurious. It was sparkling clean, in perfect condition, had great a/c, four very large state rooms, was very quiet even while underway and had a dingy. We decided to hire a captain and I think it’s the only way to go. He knew the best dive spots, where to stop for emergency rum (yes, it’s a thing!), he would take the dingy and keep an out when just one person wanted to dive (safe practice) and made dinner reservations for us at great beachfront restaurants. He was so fun we invited him to dinner most nights. Moorings marina in Tortola is incredible having a large pool, multiple grocery stores, gorgeous bar, lovely restaurant and attentive service throughout the entire operation. We had a service issue on the boat and a repair crew was provided quickly to remedy the problem. We would definitely use Moorings again.

We had the most amazing week on “Happy Endings” (5800) with Captain Dale & our cook, the angel of the Caribbean, Jan! The boat is beautiful and spacious. Our family of 4 sailed in early July…the weather was perfect and we enjoyed the low crowds. We did encounter some jelly fish and seaweed which kept us from being able to snorkel and/or enjoy some of the beaches, but there were plenty of other amazing spots to enjoy so it all worked out! Captain Glenn Shephard just completed his first-ever charter with The Moorings in the British Virgin Islands, and first as Brand Ambassador. We sat down with him after the trip to see, from his perspective, how a sailing charter in the BVI compares to the extensive list of destinations he has sailed. 

Now that you’ve just completed your inaugural charter with The Moorings in the British Virgin Islands, where would you place the BVI in the hierarchy of sailing destinations you’ve visited worldwide? 

The British Virgin Islands are probably the best place in the world for a tropical sailing holiday. One could easily spend a month or two experiencing all it has to offer, but you can hit almost all the hot spots easily on a one-week trip. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting the BVI quite a few times, many times while working on Superyachts, a couple times on catamarans and once on my first little sailboat, a 34 sloop. I think most sailors dream of cruising the islands of the Caribbean, and it’s generally accepted that the BVI represents the best sailing experience in the Caribbean, with lots of diverse anchorages and marinas within easy reach of each other in a well-protected cruising ground featuring steady trade wind sailing and crystal-clear turquoise waters.

What were your favorite anchorages, and why? 

It’s impossible to name a favorite when there are so many to choose from, but I consider these “must-sees”: Cooper Island, The Baths (probably the coolest beach on the planet) of course The North Sound and Bitter End Yacht Club on Virgin Gorda, The Settlement on Anegada, the idyllic Sandy Spit, The Bight on Norman Island (and the infamous Willie T’s)  and my all-time favorite White Bay on Jost Van Dyke with the iconic Soggy Dollar Bar, a “must see” if there ever was one. But I can easily think of ten more spots without even trying. 

Any tips you would recommend for someone considering a charter in the BVI? 

Bring plenty of sunscreen, a wide brim hat, a long sleeve rash guard or two. Definitely bring an action camera to capture the amazing world beneath the waves. Leave your cares at home, be flexible with your planning, and if you haven’t already, give a catamaran a go, I promise you won’t regret it. Lastly, go easy on the Painkillers. They are heaven in a cup, but they might sneak up on you! 

We sailed aboard a 42’, 3-cabin, Moorings 4200 sailing catamaran. During the trip you mentioned how you actually don’t have much experience sailing catamarans. What was your overall takeaway from sailing a Moorings cat for a week? 

I’ve been a monohull sailor all my days but there is no doubt that Catamarans are all the rage nowadays. It’s easy to see why: tons of space to hang out and relax inside and out and no heeling, which is especially nice if you have new sailors onboard. You can’t beat the comfort and spaciousness.  

I was blown away by the Moorings 4200 we had. She sailed really well, easily hitting 8-9 knots, and I was very impressed with how easily she tacked and built speed again on the new course. She was surprisingly capable upwind and glided effortlessly downwind with the big mainsail out on one side and the Genoa goose winged out on the other. 

But the highlight had to be the enormous owners suite that I enjoyed, taking up the entire starboard hull, with a massive walk-in shower and head compartment all the way forward and the full size bed at the back with tons of storage throughout, it felt more like a superyacht guest cabin than what I’m more accustomed to. 

We weren’t sure what to expect, but it turned out that everyone in the BVI recognized you from the show. What was that like for you? Do you experience that often? 

I spend most of my time in Europe so I usually only get recognized once every week or two, a bit more so around marinas, naturally. But meeting and being recognized by so many sailors in the BVI was a bit of a Rock Star experience, great for the ego, it’s something I’ve only really experienced at events like BravoCon or at Boat Shows like Miami or Annapolis. 

I really enjoy interacting with fans of the show, especially fellow sailors who really have that first-hand knowledge of why we all love the sea. 

Any final thoughts on your first charter with The Moorings? Did it live up to expectations? Is there anything that jumped out to you as to why you would recommend chartering with The Moorings vs. someone else? 

The trip exceeded all my expectations. The Moorings base was conveniently located and had all the amenities anyone could ever dream of, the staff were friendly and welcoming, the handover walkthrough was spot on and instilled confidence, the boat was in perfect condition and well stocked with everything one would need for a great sailing holiday. 

 I’ve been on a few charter trips with other companies and while still fun, sadly they didn’t always live up to exceptions, too many problems with equipment and systems, and a lack of follow-up support once you leave the marina. I think that’s why The Moorings remains the leader in this field. We had a small issue with a shower drain, for example, and a technician was onboard and had the problem fixed quite literally within an hour of our call, and we were back on our way. The Moorings would always be my number one choice, and I’m not just saying that because I’m now part of the team. I can’t wait until the next trip!

One of the most rewarding things about celebrating The Moorings’ 50th Anniversary is being able to reflect on the past through old photos, company milestones, and shared stories about Charlie and Ginny Cary, the admirable couple who took a chance on life to make a living doing what they loved—sailing. While most of us did not have the chance to meet the Carys, Chris Caswell, esteemed bareboat chartering author and editor of CharterSavvy.com, was blessed with the opportunity to charter with The Moorings during the early years. In the excerpt below, Mr. Caswell takes us on a journey back in time, when the boats and the BVI were quite different from today….

In the Beginning

My first bareboat charter with The Moorings was in the very early 1970’s and boy, was that a different world!!

Charlie and Ginny Cary had started their fleet with a half-dozen Pearson 35’s, which were a far cry from The Moorings bareboat yachts of today. The Pearson 35 had a pleasant cockpit, although the steering wheel was at the forward end so all the fun was behind the skipper. Cockpit table?—hadn’t been thought of. Drink holders?—wish I’d patented them!

Below, the galley wrapped around stairs from the cockpit and, in fact, the top step was the galley counter. This became quite evident when one of our crew stepped into the neatly arranged peanut butter sandwiches that were being made for lunch. (Talk about a “sticky” situation!)

Sleeping accommodations were also, um…limited. There was a vee-berth forward that guaranteed tangled toes, and a convertible dinette with a single narrow pilot berth opposite. The small head compartment had a hand-pump toilet (no holding tank in those days—straight to the water!) and the sink faucet pulled out to become the shower, which soaked everything in sight.

Under sail, the 35 was equally primitive, with a roller-furling jib that worked at least half the time without jamming, and no one had thought of stack-pack mainsails. When you dropped the mainsail in 1970, you had to beat the Dacron into a roll and lash it to the boom.

Modern transom platforms make both swimming and getting to and from tenders easy, but the 1970s-era swim ladder was a rickety aluminum frame that hung precariously from one rail. I think I may still have indentations in my feet from its painfully narrow steps. 

But the bottom line—I loved it. It was an experience that literally changed my life, and I’ve never been able to get enough bareboat charters since that week in 1970.

The BVI Back in the Day 

The BVI in the early 70’s seemed like a scene from a “Twilight Zone” show. Case in point: Charlie Cary handed me the keys and his briefing was mostly about making sure I didn’t put water in the fuel tank by mistake. When I asked which harbors might be busy, he just grinned and said, “If there’s another boat already anchored, just sail on to the next cove. It’ll probably be empty.” 

On Jost Van Dyke, there was a skinny kid named Foxy selling rum drinks and beer from a thrown-together shack on the beach. There was occasionally food, but you had to watch for the goats and cows that would wander through the tables looking for hand-outs. There was certainly no gift shop or souvenir t-shirts, but you could always count on Foxy with his battered guitar, making up songs about his guests….“You from San Diego? Hmmmm. Don’t know what rhymes with San Diego, but I’ll puzzle it out”. And soon thereafter would come a puzzled-out melody about the bareboaters from Dago —“Dey Come, Dey Go…”

Peter Island had long been owned by Percy Chubb, a big name in the yacht insurance business, a former Commodore of New York YC and a trustee of Mystic Seaport. He sold it in the late 1960’s to a Norwegian millionaire who dredged the bay for larger yachts and built A-frame chalets for visitors, but the fabulous beaches remain as they were when Dutch privateers used it as a base in the late 1600’s.

Bitter End, now that was different in 1970! It was owned by Basil Symonette, quirky black-sheep son of the former Premier of the Bahamas, and brother of Bobby Symonette, who represented the Bahamas in five Olympics in sailing, winning two gold medals. Bitter End Yacht Club, named because it was the last ‘jumping-off point’ to cross the Atlantic, was just a one-room waterfront pub with a few very rustic cottages on the hillside and some moorings. Helping Basil build the pub and cottages had been a young man, Robin Lee Graham, who sailed his 24-foot sloop “Dove” around the world at the age of 16 and later wrote the book, Dove.

Guests in the cottages had paper sheets on their beds, cold water showers, and electricity only from the generator, which shut down at Symonette’s whim. Anyone wanting to come ashore had to sound an air horn, and Symonette would shout back with a megaphone if he was having visitors.

Marina Cay was where Tony and Jackie Snell’s Last Resort had one big table for everyone, with rowdy entertainment by Tony and his donkey. No really, a donkey in the pub! Snell was an Englishman who had flown Spitfires during WWII, been shot down over Italy, and escaped with the help of partisans after being shot. A natural musician and comedian, Tony played London, Paris, New York, and ended up in the BVI. A fire burned down his first pub on Jost Van Dyke, and he moved to Bellamy Cay in Trellis Bay. His restaurant, which opened in 1973, was known for its “Gargantuan Buffet” and “Year’s Supply Of Belly Laughs”. Tony was renowned for making guests laugh at themselves and for his vast intake of brandy.

Cooper Island also had a beachfront pub, where Tim and Jan Short served amazing Cornish pasties, delicious conch fritters, and pina coladas. The Windjammer Barefoot Cruise sailing ship, Flying Cloud, would anchor nearby and bring their guests ashore, and this became a must-stop for the growing bareboat fleets.

The British Virgin Islands have certainly changed but today, nearly 50 years later, several things remain constant—warm water as clear as gin (and I would know!), amazing beaches with sand-like sugar, and the (almost) ever-present trade winds.  Without a doubt, it’s my favorite place in the world to charter.
